Years ago, when I was growing beyond bounds, a headlline in an Atlanta paper caught my eye. “Medicine Wheel Ceremony with Hyemeyohsts Storm”.
It didn’t just catch my eye...it tugged at something far deeper. Though I was ignorant, disinclined and a bit suspicious, an amazing series of events landed me at his gathering.
A profound teacher with a coonection to Nature rarely seen…
His books, however, describe an angry young man…and his path to learning.
With the passing of that chapter in my life, his books were laid aside for a decade or so.
Then, by way of a long-held prayer, a dream and a meeting, a man came into my life who turned out to be one of the most confounding and challenging experiences I’ve ever had. It was a powerful and deeply meaningful connection on a level I’d never experienced. He didn’t fit any categories…
It was then that my attention was guided back to Hyemeyohsts’ books…and in them, I found the template.
I could begin to understand and appreciate him and his life struggles in a culture that felt foreign to him. His life made sense in this context. His mother divulged that his grandfather was Native American, but he had no idea till then. He’d been cut off from that side.
These Twenty Teachers are worthy of consideration…
It goes against the grain of our society…but it may hold the key to coming into a saner relationship with Life…

Hyemeyohsts Storm was born in 1933 to Pearl Eastman of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe in Montana. His mother was one of the people of the first generation of Indians born into captivity on Reservations. Hyemeyohsts is the first generation of Indians born to these Reservation Indians. Storm, like so many of his contemporaries, experienced a transition from Indian to modern -- however, this was not a seamless bond between the old and new. His books: Seven Arrows, The Song of Heyoehkah and Lightningbolt have been described as being classics.
